Fun Word Friday: Quockerwodger is a wonderfully strange old word that originally referred to a wooden puppet or marionette controlled by someone else.
By the 19th century, particularly in British political slang, it took on a figurative meaning: a person who appears to act independently but is secretly being controlled or manipulated by someone else.
For example: “The politician was accused of being a quockerwodger, taking orders from the people behind the scenes.”
The word is especially interesting because it captures the image of a puppet on strings. Someone who seems to be making their own decisions but is actually being directed by another person.
Today, quockerwodger is extremely uncommon, which gives it a wonderfully quirky, almost whimsical quality. It would fit particularly well in a story about mysterious characters, folklore, politics, or hidden manipulation.
