Fun Word Friday: Kerfuffle is a wonderfully informal word meaning a fuss, commotion, disagreement, or minor disturbance, usually over something that isn’t terribly serious.
Example:
“There was a bit of a kerfuffle when everyone realized the picnic had been scheduled for the wrong day.”
It can describe anything from a small argument to a chaotic situation:
- A little argument: “They had a kerfuffle over who was supposed to bring the snacks.”
- A commotion: “The escaped puppy caused quite a kerfuffle at the park.”
- A confusing situation: “There was a kerfuffle at the airport when the flight was suddenly canceled.”
The charm of kerfuffle is that it tends to make a situation sound less threatening and more amusing. Calling something a “kerfuffle” suggests that, despite all the fuss, it’s probably not the end of the world.
